Sub-compact tractors (typically under 25 PTO HP) are the workhorses of small properties, half-acre to ten-acre owners who need real PTO power, a 3-point hitch, and a front loader without committing to a full-size compact tractor. Think John Deere 1025R, Kubota BX23S, Mahindra eMax 20S, Kioti CS2520.
The trade-off is hitch geometry. Most sub-compacts use either a Limited Category I hitch (narrower lift arm spacing than standard Cat I) or a true Cat I with downsized loader and 3-point lift capacity. That means standard Cat I implements often need adapters or specifically-sized sub-compact versions.
Every tractor below has been verified against its OEM spec sheet, with PTO HP, hitch category, and lift capacity figures sourced directly from the manufacturer's published documents.
