For vineyards and orchards, choose a narrow compact tractor, 20 to 40 PTO HP, with a low center of gravity, a 3-point flail mower, and a 3-point sprayer or air-blast attachment. Most North American compacts are too wide for tight European-style vineyards but fit standard 8- to 10-foot orchard rows.
Row spacing dictates tractor width. Measure between trunks at the narrowest point, subtract 12 inches for foliage and operator clearance, and that is your maximum tractor width. Most subcompact and small compact tractors fit 8-foot rows; tighter rows need a purpose-built narrow tractor.
