Spring startup checklist for a compact tractor that sat all winter. Battery, fuel, fluids, tires, and the 10 minute inspection that prevents a dealer trip.
A compact tractor that sat from November to March needs 30 minutes of attention before you put it under load. Skip this and you risk a stuck rear brake, gelled fuel, a flat radial that cracks the sidewall, or a hydraulic leak you missed because the fluid froze and split a hose. Here is the full checklist.
Walk-around inspection. Check for rodent damage. Mice love to nest in air filter housings, under the hood near the battery, and inside loader booms. Chewed wiring is the number one spring no-start cause. Pull the air filter and shake it out before starting.
Tire pressure. Check all four. Cold winter air drops pressure 5 to 10 PSI from fall readings. R1 ag rears typically run 12 to 18 PSI, R4 industrial 18 to 28 PSI, fronts 22 to 30 PSI. A flat radial that sat all winter often has a flat spot that takes 30 minutes of driving to round back out.
Engine oil. Pull the dipstick. Should be amber to medium brown. Black, milky, or smells burnt = change before starting.
Hydraulic fluid level and color. See our hydraulic fluid guide . Top off if low, change if milky (water intrusion over winter).
Coolant. Check the overflow tank. If you stored without proper antifreeze mix, the radiator may have cracked. Look for green or orange puddles under the tractor.
Loader and 3-point pins. Hit every grease zerk. 4 to 8 pumps each. Cold storage dries out grease and pins seize.
If you used a battery tender, expect 12.6 V+. Without a tender, expect 11.0 to 12.2 V and a slow crank. Charge fully before attempting to start. Cold-cranking a partially charged battery can damage cells permanently.
Clean terminals with a wire brush and apply dielectric grease. 30 seconds of work prevents a season of intermittent no-starts.
If you added stabilizer in fall, you are fine. If you did not, drain the fuel filter (most have a clear bowl with a drain at the bottom), look for water and cloudiness. If cloudy or watery, drain the entire tank and refill with fresh diesel plus PowerService Diesel Kleen.
Bleed the fuel filter air. Loosen the bleed screw, prime by hand until clear fuel comes, snug the screw.
1. Glow plugs cycled twice if temperature is under 50 F.
2. Crank for max 10 seconds. Stop, wait 30 seconds, try again. Long cranking ruins starters.
3. Once it fires, idle at 1,000 to 1,200 RPM for 5 minutes. Do not rev a cold diesel.
4. Watch for leaks. Walk around the tractor while it idles. A pinhole hydraulic leak in a cracked-from-cold hose shows itself in the first 5 minutes of pressure.
Cycle every hydraulic function: lift the loader, curl the bucket, raise and lower the 3-point, engage the PTO with no implement attached. This circulates fluid, checks for leaks, and seats rings that have not moved in 4 months.
Then drive forward 50 ft and reverse 50 ft. Apply the brakes firmly. Wet brakes that sat all winter sometimes stick on one side; this works them loose. If brakes drag, do not force it, call your dealer.
Start with light tasks for the first hour: drag the rear blade, do some loader work, mow a test area. Avoid heavy PTO work (rotary cutter in tall grass, snow blower in wet snow) until everything has been at full operating temperature for 30 minutes.
Spring is the right time for: engine oil and filter (if not done in fall), fuel filter, air filter, hydraulic filter (every other year), and a full grease job on the loader and 3-point. Two hours of work that adds 5 years of tractor life.
Engine oil level and color, coolant level, hydraulic fluid level, fuel quality (diesel can degrade or absorb water over winter), battery voltage, tire pressure, and any rodent damage to wiring or insulation. Crank without starting first to circulate oil before firing the engine.
Best practice is to change engine oil before storage so acidic combustion byproducts don't sit in the engine all winter. In spring, do a fresh hydraulic filter change if it's near the service interval, and inspect (don't necessarily change) coolant and gear oil.
If fuel sat all winter without a stabilizer, drain a sample from the tank and inspect for water (will settle to the bottom) and microbial growth (cloudy or stringy). For mild contamination, change the fuel filter and run the tractor under load. For heavy contamination, drain and refill the tank.
Charge or replace the battery first, most no-crank issues after storage are a dead battery. Check rodent damage to wiring under the hood and seat. Confirm safety switches are in start position. If everything checks out and it still won't crank, test the starter solenoid and main battery cables for corrosion.
