These three attachments do overlapping jobs and are usually compared on price and jaw width. Loader manufacturers publish lift capacity at the pivot pin, and sometimes 500 mm forward of it. All three of these attachments carry their load well forward of the pin - a pallet on forks sits at or beyond 24 inches, and so does the centre of mass of a grappled brush pile. Measured across the loaders in this database that publish both figures, capacity at 24 inches runs about 31 percent below the pin rating, and more than that on the smallest loaders.
So the arithmetic is: take your loader's published figure, convert it to usable capacity at 24 inches, subtract the attachment's empty weight, and what remains is your material allowance. The most useful of the three for most owners and the harshest on capacity, because a pallet puts its mass at the far end of the tines. A frame plus tines runs 175 to 320 lbs depending on rating and width.
Watch for two things. First, a lighter frame is not automatically the better buy - fork capacity ratings exist and a light frame may be rated well below your loader. Second, frame weight does not scale predictably with width; some 48-inch frames weigh less than 42-inch ones because they are built to a different rating class entirely. Read the stated weight, do not infer it from the size.
The lightest of the three by a wide margin, typically 90 to 200 lbs, because a spear is a frame and one or two tines with nothing else on it. That leaves the most capacity for the load, which matters because a wet round bale can outweigh a dry one by half again.
The constraint is not weight but geometry: a single-tine spear concentrates the entire load on one point and a bale that shifts on the tine changes the machine's balance suddenly. Two smaller tines, or a spear with stabiliser spikes, is the safer arrangement on a light tractor.
The most capable and the one most likely not to fit. Empty weights run 380 to 720 lbs, and on a sub-compact loader with roughly 490 lbs of usable capacity at 24 inches, a 530 lb root grapple is over the limit with nothing in it . That is not a marginal pairing; it is an impossible one, and it is the single most common front-mount mismatch we see.
Grapples also require a third-function hydraulic circuit to open and close the jaw. Many compact loaders ship without one, and adding a kit is a real cost that belongs in the comparison rather than as a surprise afterwards. If your loader cannot carry a grapple, a set of forks and a chain does more of the same work than most people expect. It is slower and less pleasant and it does not need 500 lbs of capacity before you start.
Moving bagged or palletised material, or lifting anything with a flat base: forks. Moving round bales and little else: a spear, and the leftover capacity is the point. Handling brush, logs, storm debris or anything that will not sit still: a grapple, if and only if the arithmetic at the top of this page leaves you meaningful capacity once its empty weight is subtracted.
Run the specific pairing through the compatibility checker before buying. It compares each attachment's empty weight against your loader's usable capacity at 24 inches, flags where the attachment's own deadweight consumes more than half of what you have, and states whether a third function is documented on your tractor.
Bucket-mounted clamp-on forks exist and work for occasional light pallet handling, typically rated 800 to 1500 lbs. For frequent or heavier work, use a quick-attach pallet fork frame that mounts directly to the loader. Clamp-on forks can slip under load and damage the bucket's cutting edge.
Measured 4x5 round bales run lighter than most rules of thumb suggest. A Wisconsin extension weighing study averaged 986 lbs for legume and 846 lbs for grass; WVU Extension puts the range at 700 to 1,000 lbs, with a rained-on bale reaching about 1,200. A bale spear should attach to a loader with at least 1,400 lbs of usable capacity 24 inches forward of the pin - that is roughly a 2,150 lb at-pin rating. Always carry bales low and add rear ballast, a high bale dramatically shifts the center of gravity.
A grapple shines for brush, logs, debris cleanup, and storm cleanup where loose material won't sit in a bucket. The hinged top jaw clamps irregular loads. Grapples need a third hydraulic function or a diverter valve, so confirm your loader is plumbed for it before buying.
