Kubota BX2380 vs John Deere 1025R: PTO HP, hitch geometry, loader lift, quick attach, mid-mount mower, and which sub-compact wins for 1–5 acres in 2026.
The BX2380 and 1025R are the two best-selling sub-compact tractors in North America. Same class (~23 HP), same buyer (1–5 acres, mowing, light loader work, maybe a snowblower), and priced within a few hundred dollars of each other. The differences are in hitch geometry, loader coupler, and how each brand handles attachments long-term.
Both use 2-range HST transmissions and support 54" or 60" mid-mount decks (BX drive-over, JD AutoConnect). The differences that matter aren't in the horsepower - they're in the hitch geometry and the loader coupler.
The BX2380 is true Cat 1 - standard 7/8" lower pins, 3/4" top link, 26" between lower arms. Any Cat 1 implement bolts on without adapters.
The 1025R is Limited Category 1 - 7/8" pins but the lower arms sit 20.5" apart, narrower than standard Cat 1's 26". Many Cat 1 implements physically don't fit, or fit only after John Deere's iMatch Quick-Hitch ($500–$700) adapts the geometry. Budget for iMatch if you plan to use non-Deere rear implements on a 1025R. Full detail in the Limited Category 1 hitch guide .
The 1025R's JD 120R uses JDQA - a quick attach coupler that lets you swap bucket, forks, and grapple in 30 seconds without tools. Aftermarket support is real: pallet forks, grapples, and bale spears are available in JDQA from Titan, Everything Attachments, and Precision Manufacturing.
The BX2380's LA240 is pin-on - you unbolt the bucket to swap. Adding forks means buying an adapter or a dedicated pin-on set. Kubota does not offer a factory SSQA option on the BX-series LA240. If quick-swap loader attachments matter to you, the 1025R has a real edge here.
True Cat 1 hitch. Any $400 rotary cutter, box blade, or land plane from Titan, Land Pride, or Everything Attachments bolts on. On the 1025R you either buy iMatch or shop the smaller "sub-compact" implement subset.
Simpler drive-over deck. BX's drive-over mid-mount takes ~3 minutes to engage. JD's AutoConnect is slicker (drive over, hydraulic engage) but has more moving parts to maintain.
Kubota diesel reputation. The D902 is one of the most-produced diesel engines in the world - parts and service on every continent.
JDQA loader coupler. Genuine quick-swap for the loader is worth more than most spec-sheet differences after year one.
Higher 3-point and loader lift. ~11% more at the hitch, ~7% more at the loader pin.
iMatch is a real feature. With the iMatch quick-hitch, you can hook up rear implements in 15 seconds without getting off the seat. No BX equivalent.
Dealer network. ~2x more John Deere dealers than Kubota in North America. Matters for filters, warranty, and used-parts availability in 10 years.
