Diesel tractors do not start for a small number of reasons, and they almost always fail in the same order of likelihood. Work through this list top to bottom and you will find the problem 95 percent of the time before you call the dealer.

Step 1: What does the engine actually do?

Step 2: Battery and electrical (60 percent of all no-starts)

Check battery voltage with a multimeter. Should read 12.4 V or higher resting, 9.6 V minimum while cranking. Below 12.0 V resting and the battery needs charging or replacement. Clean the terminals, check the ground strap to the engine block (corrosion here mimics a dead battery), and check the main fuse (often 40 to 60 A under the dash or near the battery).

Step 3: Fuel system (20 percent of no-starts)

Open the fuel shutoff valve (yes, really, this is the most embarrassing fix). Check the fuel gauge with the key on. If you ran out of fuel, you almost certainly have air in the lines. Loosen the bleed screw on the fuel filter, hand-pump the primer until clear fuel comes out, then loosen the bleed screws on the injectors and crank until fuel weeps. If it lights but the engine still will not start cold, one or more glow plugs are dead. Test by pulling each plug and checking continuity (should be under 2 ohms). Replace as a set, $15 to $40 each.

Step 5: Safety switches (8 percent of no-starts)

Compact tractors have 3 to 6 safety switches that all need to be satisfied to crank: PTO off, transmission in neutral or park, HST pedal centered, seat occupied (some models), parking brake set (some models). One bad switch and the tractor will not crank. Wiggle each lever, sit firmly on the seat, and try again. Most common failures: seat switch (especially on hydrostatic models), PTO switch, HST neutral switch.

Step 6: When to call the dealer (2 percent)
